Oma's Honey Butter Rolls
Caroline Willard
Breads & Baking
These soft, slightly sweet rolls were a Sunday dinner staple. The dough could be prepared in the morning and left to rise while everyone gathered in the kitchen. They were especially good warm from the oven with plenty of butter.
INGREDIENTS
3 cups all-purpose flour
2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
¾ cup warm milk
3 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
FOR THE TOPPING
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 tablespoon honey
Pinch of flaky salt
DIRECTIONS
Stir the warm milk, honey, and yeast together. Let stand for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.
Add the egg, melted butter, and salt.
Gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms.
Knead for about 6–8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Place in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour, until doubled.
Divide the dough into 12 pieces and shape into balls. Place in a greased baking dish.
Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Bake at 375°F for 18–22 minutes, until golden brown.
Stir together the melted butter and honey. Brush over the warm rolls and finish with a pinch of flaky salt.
Oma's note: Don't be shy with the butter.
